Supporting Your Child's Behaviour

  • Insist on courtesy and good manners from an early age
  • Setting boundaries helps children to learn about the consequences of their behaviour. It also helps them to feel secure and encourages their independence. Acknowledge your childs feelings but set clear boundaries to show what is and isnt acceptable. Explain to your child why the boundaries are there and stick to them.
  • Try to talk to your child in a positive manner by explaining to them what you want them to do, instead of telling them what you dont want them to do. This helps them to learn how to speak in an appropriate tone.
  • Give plenty of praise and rewards for good behaviour to enable your child to learn that your attention is given when they are well behaved and not when they behave badly.
  • It is natural for your child to feel unhappy, upset or angry at times. Let them know that you are there to support them and encourage your child to talk through their problems rather than resorting to aggression or violence.
